Acupuncture
Acupuncture is arguably the oldest, most commonly practiced medical procedure in the world and is used by one-third of the world as a primary health-care system. Acupuncture stems from traditional wisdom that developed in and around China over a period of approximately 5,000 years. It includes the concept of qi, often translated as “energy,” and is based on observations of the natural laws that govern the movement of this energy, both in nature and in people. When the flow of qi in the body is disharmonious, symptoms will appear in the body, mind or spirit of a person. Acupuncture involves the insertion of sterile, single-use-only needles into the body with a specific intention to elicit an appropriate movement of energy. The desired result is to offer the patient a concrete sense of spiritual, emotional, and physical balance. Effective use of acupuncture treats the underlying imbalances and promotes harmony within the whole person. In other words, acupuncture treats the root cause of the disharmony in order to alleviate symptoms and also to prevent their recurrence.

I received a Masters of Acupuncture degree at Tai Sophia Institute for the Healing Arts in Laurel, Maryland. Prior to this I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Virginia. I practice Classical and 5 Element Acupuncture as well as Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture. I am also a certified Acupuncture Detoxification Specialist meaning I am qualified to support people recovering from various addictions. Personally, I have always been drawn to holistic forms of medicine where I felt like I was treated as a person, rather than a set of symptoms. I carry this appreciation for relationship-centered care into my role as acupuncturist, and I will partner with you on your journey to feeling better and living your life more fully. I am constantly amazed by the depth and power of this medicine, and I am excited to share these possibilities with you.

What conditions can acupuncture treat?Acupuncture is excellent for maintaining health, facilitating well-being and preventing disease. It is also a safe, natural and effective means to treat and/or support those with a broad range of conditions. Individuals who pursue ongoing treatment for maintenance and the promotion of good health report: staying well longer and recovering from illness more quickly; improved stamina and vitality; improved capacity to positively influence their own health; reductions in long-term health-care costs and tend to visit physicians less often; deepened and more harmonious relationships with others.Does it hurt?I use high quality, sterile, single-use needles that are only slightly thicker than a human hair. The treatment process calls for the needles to be inserted just beneath the skin's surface. Sensations vary from person to person with some clients feeling a dull, momentary ache or tingling sensation.How many times will I need to come?This depends greatly on the reasons you are coming for treatment. Typically, I recommend weekly treatments for 6-8 weeks in order to restore balance in the body and give you a good idea of the benefits you will receive from continued treatment. After these initial sessions, we will discuss a maintenance plan specific to your needs. For some people, especially those with chronic conditions, this may be several treaments monthly, for others it may be only seasonal treatments or as needed. Feel free to ask me more specifically about this question as it relates to your particular needs.What can I expect at my appointments?The first appointment lasts 1 1/2 - 2 hours. We will discuss your concerns, your health history and goals of treatment. I will perform a traditional Chinese medical diagnosis so that I can create a unique treatment plan relevant to your concerns. You will also receive your first treatment, which people typically report as being extremely relaxing. Follow-up visits last about an hour. We will spend the first 15 minutes or so talking about what has changed since the last treatment and what you would like out of treatment for the day. The rest of the time you will spend relaxing on the table and enjoying your treatment. Please call for pricing and current specials.Does insurance cover my costs?A growing number of insurance companies will reimburse for acupuncture treatments. Consult your insurer for the terms of coverage on your policy. However, full payment is due at the time of each treatment.
